A savanna in Indonesia?!
My thoughts exactly after asking some friends what to expect in Baluran National Park.
Because when I hear the word "savanna" and "safari", the first thing that comes to mind is Africa.

But after traveling around Indonesia's massive land area, I'm no longer surprised. Their landscape is diverse with lots of pretty surprises just waiting to be discovered.
Baluran is one of them.

With a total land area of 25,000 hectares, Baluran is home to over 444 species of plants and 26 mammals which include buffalo, deer, banteng, leaf monkeys, monitor lizards, squirrels, fruit bats, civet cats, and leopards.
Even King Cobras apparently...just casually scattered all over some of the fields...
This I found out just a few minutes after coming back from a long leisurely walk on the said field.

| Thankfully, none of us were bitten. Maybe large noisy groups scare them away. Anyway, next time you visit, make sure to read ALL the signs and ask your guide where it's safe to walk before going out exploring on your own.  |

| If something does happen...(hahaha, although I seriously doubt it unless you're utterly daft and disregard all the rules)...just look for this house. It's near the toilet, I think it's the help center. Or to avoid this entirely, just go on a Safari Tour. There's lots of options available on google.  |

Banluran is vast and quite secluded from the nearest town and any evidence of modern civilization which makes it a nice quiet and serene place to get in touch with yourself, catch up on some reading or do a bit of sketching like the @sketchwalker, Motulz. |

| Located in East Java, it's quite near Ijen and Bromo which makes this park a perfect side trip destination once you've decided to add a hike to either volcano into your travel itinerary. WHAT? YOU HAVEN'T??? YOU SHOULD! Ijen is Bucketlist worthy. Speaking of volcanoes, this is also where the now dormant Gunung Baluran volcano is located. I hear it's also worth a hike.  |

FOOD | DRINK | LODGING
Not many establishments here so its best to bring your own food. There area however, little stores where you can buy snacks.
For lodging, you can either camp or contact Rosa's Eco Lodge - they also offer safari tours and some other interesting activities around Baluran.

CELL SERVICE AND MOBILE INTERNET
There is no mobile internet in Baluran but there is a little bit of cell service, enough to text and maybe make a phone call, you just need to walk around for a good signal.
This shouldn't be a problem if you're just staying for the day, it's quite refreshing to go "off the grid" even for just a few hours.

WHAT TO SEE AND HOW LONG TO STAY?
This totally depends on what you want to do. If you're just there for a little bit of quiet time and to see some monkeys and buffalo, a few hours are enough.
However, if you're into bird watching - there are 196 different species here including the Green Junglefowl, Green Peafowl, Beach Thick-knee, Orange-breasted Pigeon, Banded Pitta, Javan Cuckoo-shrike, Black-winged Starling, Small Buttonquail, Small Blue Kingfisher, Brown Prinia, Grey-cheeked Tit Babbler, you might want to stay a bit longer or even overnight.
There's also BAMA BEACH nearby which has white sands and some good live coral for it to be considered a decent snorkeling spot.
